LNG Island Project
Issues Affecting Surfers
Dear Members,
Please read the ENTIRE e-mail:
Well it looks like the man-made LNG island is going to go through. In fact it has been approved for double its current projected size. Construction will commence almost immediately and this private enterprise of an island just won “stimulus” funding from the US government. The project cited “some opposition by fisherman, but no real opposition otherwise.”
It is important to note that since this island will be built on the old marine dumping grounds that area beaches from Point Lookout to the Rockaways as well as the Jersey Shore will be closed for swimming as well as other forms of recreation until at least late 2010. In fact, it is recommended that in the case of anything other than a SE swell, that Jones Beach, Tobay, Gilgo, and Cedar also be closed as a precaution.
I am afraid that surfing on Long Island will be limited to points East this summer (hopefully the pollution won’t be so bad as to close down all the beaches on the South Shore). And Surfing will never return to the Rockaways (and perhaps Long Beach) as this island and its breakwater will certainly prevent any waves from reaching the beaches. Well, it was fun while it lasted. You might want to beat what local news agencies are calling “beach flight” by selling your house before this thing is built and the south shore real estate market completely tanks.
Remember when I told you to read the entire e-mail? Well this “Safe Harbor”/ Insanity Island has not been approved yet. We can still fight it.
