Last week, as Hurricane Katia churned off the coast, I flew up to New York to catch some surf and check out the Quiksilver Pro New York. The biggest surf contest of all time was being held right at home, and I couldn’t miss it. Katia provided us with some fun waves, and proved to be a great playing field for the world’s top 32 to throw down…. Kelly Slater, getting some cover right outside of NYC.

Typically the random stops on the side of the road have not worked to well in the past. I’ve gone through that routine looking to dodge the crowds on Long Island and in New Jersey quite a few times, and very few has it actually paid off. After I almost decided to call it a day, I figured i’d pull into this small gravel lot about 20 miles south of where I just surfed. Super fun A-Frames and only a few people out. My day trip got extended a few more hours.
Heading down a random cutout path through the woods on the side of A1A for a spot check.
So far I am 1 for 1 on Hurricane swells this year. Irene went up the coast and caused some damage for my friends up North, but to my surprise cruised past Florida and sent some swell with it. I’ve lived in Fort Myers for about a year now and have been skunked most of the times I venture across to the East Coast looking for waves. The Irene swell proved to be different. After driving across the state Friday night after work, I spent the majority of Saturday surfing, shooting, surfing, shooting and slamming waters as it was about 100 degrees out with the sun blazing all day. I got some really fun waves and after about a year of not shooting much surf, got a water shot ran in Eastern Surf Magazine I’ll be posting some more shots shortly.
